■ How to Choose This Transformer

Five kilovolt-amperes is the point at which a step-down converter stops being plugged in and starts being wired in, so the calculation matters more than the shopping list. Total the input wattage of everything the secondary will feed, allow for diversity, then check the heaviest motor separately — a compressor or air-conditioning unit draws several times its running current on every start and will set the ceiling. On this frame the practical limits are about 2,600W of resistive load, 1,600W of motor or pump duty and 800W of compressor load.

Three points to confirm before ordering:

• the direction of conversion and the actual supply voltage at the point of use;
• the socket standard for the destination market and the plug type on the input lead;
• whether the unit will be hardwired through a terminal block or run from a cord and plug.

■ Planning a Hardwired Installation

Because this unit is normally fixed rather than moved, plan the whole circuit at the same time as the transformer: where it will live, how the primary will be isolated, and how the secondary will be distributed. At 110–120V a 2,600W load draws roughly 22A, so size the secondary cable for that current over the full run length and protect it with its own breaker rather than relying on the primary device.

Where several socket outlets are fed from one transformer, a small secondary distribution board gives a cleaner installation than a chain of trailing sockets. Fix the case with 10cm of clear air on every face and bond the enclosure to the installation earth.

1. The efficiency of the DT/ST series is 80%. For equipment with motors or compressors, the starting current will multiply — always reserve adequate power margin.

■ FAQ

Can the transformer be hardwired instead of plugged in?

Yes. A terminal block is provided for fixed wiring alongside the on-board socket. For permanent installations we recommend a lockable isolator upstream so the unit can be taken out of service safely.

Does the output frequency change?

No. A transformer converts voltage only; the output frequency always matches the input. A 50Hz to 60Hz conversion requires a frequency converter instead.

How much clearance does the unit need?

At least 10cm of free air on every face. Do not stack units and do not install the frame inside a sealed panel without forced ventilation.

Is a spare fuse or MCB available locally?

Yes, both are standard items. Should a winding fault occur, return the unit with its serial number and our engineering team will carry out a root-cause assessment before deciding on repair or replacement.
