■ How to Choose This Transformer
Work out the continuous load first and the surge second. For a mixed panel on a 3KVA frame the safe working figure is about 1,800W of resistive or electronic load, roughly 1,000W of pump and fan load, and only 400–600W of compressor load once start-up current is allowed for. If the arithmetic sits close to the boundary, take the larger frame: running a transformer at 60 % of rating keeps the winding cooler, reduces acoustic noise and extends service life at very little extra cost.
Three practical points to confirm:
- the measured supply voltage and the direction of conversion required;
- the socket standard for your market;
- how much clearance the installation allows, since the frame needs 10cm of free air on every face.
■ Mounting, Testing and Traceability
Although a carrying handle is fitted, most 3KVA units end up installed rather than moved. Keep the case out of closed cabinets, avoid mounting it on a lightweight partition that would act as a sounding board, and terminate the primary through an isolator so the unit can be locked off for service. Every unit is dielectric-tested and then run at rated load, with winding resistance, no-load current and output voltage recorded against the production batch and kept for twelve months.
The 3000VA frame is also the smallest in the range that is regularly supplied with a terminal-block input rather than a cord set. That makes it the entry point for installations where the transformer is wired into a panel and switched from an isolator rather than from its own front-panel switch.
For fixed installations, terminate the primary through a dedicated isolator and record the serial number on the panel schedule. Test records are filed against that number, so a later query can be traced without opening the enclosure.
