■ How to Choose This Transformer

Five kilovolt-amperes is the point where a converter stops being carried and starts being installed, so the decision is less about wattage than about what the unit will feed. Work from the total connected load rather than the sum of nameplate ratings, allow for diversity in the real installation, and then check the heaviest motor separately. Air-conditioning and refrigeration compressors have the highest inrush of any common load and will dominate the calculation.

Three decisions to make in advance:

• whether the load is a single appliance or a small distribution board, which changes the downstream protection;
• the conversion direction and the socket standard for the destination market;
• where the unit will live, because 10cm of clear air on every side is a requirement rather than a recommendation.

■ Protecting the Downstream Circuit

When this frame feeds a sub-board rather than one appliance, design the protection alongside the transformer. Fit a dedicated breaker on the primary sized to the transformer, distribute the secondary through its own breakers, and add an earth-leakage device on that side if portable tools are involved. A lockable isolator upstream lets the unit be taken out of service without disturbing the rest of the installation. Because a laminated core produces both audible hum and continuous low-level heat, keep at least 300mm between the case and any heat-producing equipment.

Because the 3000VA, 4000VA and 5000VA frames share one carton at 54.5 × 33 × 24.5cm, a pallet can be mixed across three ratings without changing box dimensions — roughly 260 units fit a palletised 20ft container at this size.

Allow 300mm between the case and any heat-producing equipment in the same room, and avoid mounting it on a lightweight partition that would act as a sounding board. Both measures cut complaints about noise in occupied areas.
