■ How to Choose This Transformer

Ten kilovolt-amperes is distribution-scale, so size for the expected simultaneous load rather than the sum of everything installed. Diversity in a real workshop or laundry is rarely 100 %, but the heaviest motor still sets the ceiling: on this frame allow about 5,200W of resistive load, 3,200W of fan and pump duty, or 1,600W of compressor load. We normally recommend planning so that the usual operating load sits at around 70 % of the rating.

Three items to settle before ordering:

• whether the secondary will feed a sub-board or a single machine, which determines conductor and breaker sizing;
• the conversion direction together with the socket standard for your market;
• the mounting position and the clearance available for convection cooling.

■ System Design Around a 10KVA Frame

At 110V and 5,200W the secondary current approaches 47A, which calls for a cable cross-section far larger than an equivalent 220V circuit — under-sizing the secondary cable is the most common installation error we see on 10KVA projects. The unit ships one to a carton at 42.5 × 33 × 28cm and is normally wall-bracketed or set on a plinth; it is heavy enough to need two people. Each unit is dielectric-tested and then run at rated load, with output voltage, no-load current and winding resistance recorded against the serial number for twelve months.

Where the connected load genuinely exceeds the figures above, two 10KVA frames on separate circuits are often more economical than moving to a non-standard rating. Discuss the duty cycle with us before assuming a bespoke build is required.

The unit is heavy enough to need two people when positioning it on a bracket or plinth. Wooden-crate packing is available for export shipments where the standard carton is not considered sufficient.
