Two kilovolt-amperes is the rating to pick when several appliances have to be available on one circuit rather than used one at a time. Total the input wattage of everything that could be plugged in simultaneously, then apply the surge factor for the worst load in the group — 1.5 × for resistive and electronic equipment, 2.5–3 × for motors, and up to 5 × for a compressor. This frame supports roughly 1,600W of continuous resistive load, which is two medium appliances at once.

Three points to settle first:

• which appliances will share the transformer, and whether they can ever run together;
• the plug and socket standard used in the destination market;
• where the unit will sit, because a cabinet or cupboard will trap the heat it produces.

In hotels, guesthouses and staff canteens the transformer usually stays connected while staff plug different devices into it through the day. What is the difference between the ST-2000VA and the STU models?

They share the same core and enclosure. The ST-2000VA is catalogued as a straightforward single-phase step-down converter, while the STU models are the same platform marketed with the USB outlet and travel accessories. If you do not need the USB port, the ST version is the simpler buy.

Can a fridge and a microwave share this transformer?

Not at the same time. The fridge draws little once running, but its compressor start-up is heavy, and a microwave pulls 1,300–1,600W from the wall while it cooks. Add the input wattages first, remembering that 2KVA leaves about 1,600W of continuous capacity.

Which socket standard should I specify?

Match the appliances, not the building. If the 110V equipment came from the United States, order a US socket; where a market stocks mixed appliances, a universal socket avoids returns. The standard is fitted during assembly, so it cannot be changed afterwards.

Does the enclosure need to be earthed?

Yes. Bond the case to the installation earth and connect the transformer to a socket that is itself protected by an earth-leakage device. The output is isolated from the primary, which is a safety benefit, but the enclosure is metal and still needs earthing.

What happens if I exceed the rating?

The MCB protects against short circuits and gross overload, not against sustained overloading. Running above the continuous figure shows up as heat first and shorter service life later, so choose one frame up if your load sits close to the limit.
