■ How to Choose This Regulator

The output of a manual regulator is set by hand and can be varied smoothly and continuously from zero up to the maximum value, so the first question is not capacity but whether you need an adjustable supply at all. A fixed-ratio transformer is the cheaper answer when one voltage is required; a regulator is the right choice for calibration, development work, motor speed tests and any application where the voltage has to be dialled in. Once that is settled, size the rating from the maximum current the load will draw at the highest output voltage you intend to use.

Three points to confirm before ordering:

• the maximum output voltage and current required, since capacity is set by the product of the two;
• the input supply voltage at the installation;
• whether an output meter is needed — it is fitted as standard on the larger models in the family.

What does a manual voltage regulator mean in practice?

The output is set by turning a knob rather than by an automatic circuit. Voltage can be varied smoothly and continuously from zero up to the maximum, which is why the product suits calibration, development work and motor speed tests rather than unattended supply.

Can the output go above 130V?

On the standard American-style configuration the range is 0–130V from a 110V input. A higher output requires a different tapping arrangement, so the maximum output voltage has to be confirmed at the order stage.

How accurate is the dial setting?

The output is continuous and smooth, but it is not a calibrated instrument reading. An indicating meter is provided on the larger frames so the setting can be read directly; for measurement-grade work, verify the output with your own reference meter.

Does the regulator isolate the load from the mains?

No. This is an auto-transformer design, so the load shares a connection with the supply. Where galvanic isolation is required, a double-wound step up and step down transformer should be used instead.

What maintenance does the brush contact need?

The output is taken from a brush running on the winding track, so inspect both at intervals and replace the brush once wear becomes visible. Keep the track free of dust and avoid leaving the regulator parked at the extreme end of its travel when it is not in use.
