Two suffix families are produced on one platform: TC-D for the smaller frames and THG for the standard market, together covering 100VA to 10KVA. The transformer is designed for equipment rated at the opposite mains voltage from the supply it will be connected to, and will carry any electrical or electronic load up to its rated wattage.

■ How to Choose This Transformer

Choose the frame from the appliance, not from the transformer. Read the input wattage on the rating plate, add up whatever will be connected at the same time, then apply a factor of 1.5 for resistive and electronic equipment, 2.5–3 for motors and pumps and up to 5 for compressors. The small TC-D frames from 100VA to 300VA suit electronics and small audio equipment; 500VA to 1000VA covers kitchen appliances and power tools; from 1500VA the transformer is usually serving a single machine or a small circuit.

Three details to confirm:

• which direction the conversion runs and what the local mains voltage actually measures;
• whether one or two output sockets are required, and to which standard;
• how the unit will be installed, since the single-bolt toroidal mounting needs a firm, flat surface.

■ Practical Notes on Toroidal Converters

Inrush current on switching a toroidal core is higher than on a laminated one, so the primary fuse should be of the correct type rather than simply matched to running current. The single mounting bolt must be firm but not over-tightened, as excessive pressure can distort the core and raise no-load current. Because stray field is very low these units can be positioned close to signal electronics without shielding, but they are sensitive to any DC offset on the supply — where the mains carries a DC component, a small series choke is worth considering.

Which frame should I pick for a 1.5kW appliance?

1,500W of resistive load suits a 2000VA frame or larger. If the appliance has a motor or compressor, apply the surge factor first — a 1,500W compressor would call for a 5000VA frame.

Is the TC-D the same product as the THG?

They share the winding technology, the double power core and the fuse philosophy. The difference is the enclosure size, which is why the two families are catalogued separately.

Will the transformer run continuously?

Yes, within rating. For 24/7 duty we advise loading to no more than 80 % of the nameplate figure, and derating further if the unit is installed inside a panel rather than in free air.

Which sockets can be supplied?

US, UK, EU Schuko, Australian, South African and universal layouts are all produced. The standard is fitted during assembly, so it must be specified on the order.
