This toroidal converter works in 110V countries and 220V countries alike, converting fully automatically from 220–240V to 110–120V and from 110–120V to 220–240V with no manual setting.

The input voltage is selected automatically according to the supply available where the unit is being used, so the same transformer can be taken from one region to another.

The automatic input selector covers 110V, 120V, 220V and 240V. Other voltage combinations can be wound to order.

■ How to Choose This Transformer

The ZX range takes the selector switch out of the user’s hands, so the only decision is capacity. Work from the input wattage on the appliance rating plate, add 1.5 × for heating and electronic loads and 2.5–3 × for motors, then pick the frame that covers the total. At 1000VA this unit carries roughly 800W continuously and is the general-purpose workshop size; the 500VA and 750VA models cover electronics and audio, while the 1500VA and 2000VA frames are for equipment with an induction motor.

Three points to confirm before ordering:

• the total wattage of the equipment, and whether any of it has a motor;
• the socket standard required for the destination market;
• where the unit will be mounted, since the single central bolt of a toroidal core needs a firm, flat surface.

At one kilowatt a conventional laminated transformer produces an audible 50/60Hz hum that is noticeable in a quiet room, and it radiates a stray field that can disturb nearby signal wiring. The toroidal core in the ZX confines almost all of the flux inside the winding, which is why this family is chosen for studio installations, laboratory benches and any location where the transformer will sit close to people or to sensitive equipment. The lower core loss also means less heat for the same output.

1. The efficiency of the DT/ST series is 80%. For equipment with motors or compressors, the starting current will multiply — always reserve adequate power margin.
2. Pure resistive / electronic loads: choose a transformer with capacity ≥ 1.5× the equipment rated power.
3. Inductive loads such as motors and compressors: choose a transformer with capacity ≥ 2.5–3× the equipment rated power.

How does the automatic voltage selection work?

The input stage senses the incoming supply and configures the winding arrangement accordingly, so a 220V supply feeding a 110V appliance and a 110V supply feeding a 220V appliance need no different product and no manual setting.

Can I use the ZX-1000 with a laser printer?

A laser printer draws a large inrush when the fuser warms up, which can exceed the continuous rating even though the average load looks small. Size up a frame, or connect the printer on its own.

What happens if the supply voltage sags?

A passive transformer tolerates a wide input band and does not trip out on brief sags the way an electronic converter does. Output simply follows the input until the supply recovers.

Is it safe to leave energised continuously?

Yes, provided the case has free air around it. Idle power consumption is low, and there is nothing to configure or reset after a power cut.
